Paula Murray
Paula Murray, born in Ottawa, first studied science at the University of Ottawa before turning to ceramics at Sheridan College. Since 1980, she has lived and worked on the shores of Meech Lake, Québec. Her artistic vision has been shaped by a long relationship with nature, water, and sailing between Canada and South America, as well as by her exploration of the nature of reality, informed by her discovery of the Bahá’í Faith.
Working primarily in porcelain, she pushes the material beyond its conventional limits, exploring transformation, fragility, and resilience. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2007 and to the International Academy of Ceramics in 2017. Her work has received international recognition, including awards and honourable mentions in China, Italy, Japan, and Korea, and in 2015 she received the Prix du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec – Work of the Year for Connection x Connexion. Her works are held in major public and private collections worldwide, and she has participated in international residencies and projects, including at Taoxichuan Art Centre in Jingdezhen and the Canada C3 Arctic expedition in 2017.
